Chapter Nine

Layton wasn’t sure what he was doing. Chase brought out this part of him, this part of Layton’s personality and character that was equal amounts primal and stupid. This part of him that he had worked really hard to make sure he had buried inside. Layton wouldn't have been able to have built this into his career if he had let his temper, or his impulsive side, be the most important part of him. It wasn't most of the time. Maybe 90% of the time Layton was perfectly in control and knew exactly what he was doing.

But with Chase, it felt much harder for him to keep that side of himself hidden, even from himself. He washed his face and looked at his reflection in the mirror. He thought he would be able to stop himself from pursuing anything with Chase because he had been able to stop himself when temptation had presented itself to him before. Temptation had, however, never been as big as it had with Chase. In every sense of the word, he thought as he smacked at his own reflection.

His expression changed as he realized what he was thinking about. Whatever his feelings about Chase were, he knew that shouldn’t have happened. He knew better than to have let it happen. Yet, fuck, it had happened, and Chase had seemed so eager and willing to participate.

Layton might have touched his knee in a suggestive way, but Chase had been the one that had kissed him. Sure, Layton had been the one that had hugged him, but God, it was horrible for Chase to be there, crying his eyes out, without anyone to comfort him.

It felt like it would have been cruel to let him go through that alone. Layton didn’t want to be cruel, though he was aware he might be breaking some boundaries by hugging him, but he’d had to.

Then Chase had turned to look at him and—he closed his eyes. It had been Chase who had kissed him, he was sure of it, but Layton didn’t need much encouragement. And Layton had made it so Chase thought it was an okay thing to do, so clearly a lot of the responsibility lay at his feet.

He had made it possible for Chase to do that. Fucking Chase, his star witness, son of John Church. Part of it was that Layton was sure, for the first time, the man in front of him had also been a victim of John Church.

He had always felt like he was probably a victim, but it wasn’t until there were tears streaming down his face that he could feel it in his heart, that Layton hadn’t been wrong about his intuition, and that his dream had been right.

Though he hadn’t expected what had happened.

He needed to get through this, drive Chase somewhere where he would be safe, and then never worry about him again. He was going to be a footnote in his life.

He was sure of it.

A footnote.

He
